A drive to Naivasha is only 1hr 30mins, whichever road you use; either through the Nakuru highway or through the old Maai Mahiu – Naivasha Road. The latter route is particularly interesting, as you get to meander gradually through the breathtaking and almost suicidal escapement road. This road - which is the ‘original road’ built by Italians prisoners of war, in the 1940’s, sits a tiny chapel with architectural textures that have a colonial musing to it (Maai Mahiu Chapel) and can accommodate up to eight people at time. It is visible just before you reach Maai Mahiu town.

Still on the way is the panoramic and beckoning view of Mt. Longonot, which is very ideal for hiking, either in small parties or large groups.

Most of the major hotels of this little town are also along this road and there appears to be some competition between hotels and the visible green houses.

Elsamere - A Getaway Destination
Whilst in Naivasha, you cannot miss to visit one of the most popular getaways, Elsamere. Elsamere is one of the town’s historical homes, having belonged to Joy and George Adamson of Born Free fame. This house sits on the shores of Lake Naivasha, just a few kilometers after Hell’s Gate National park.

At Elsamere you have 10 rooms all ensuite to choose from, each with a very good view of Lake Naivasha. Buffet lunch is served everyday of the week and if visiting over the weekend, you can enjoy buffet lunch and high tea all included in one package. Boat trips around the lake are an option either for an hour or to the nearby Crescent Island, where you get the rare chance to walk amongst wild animals in complete safety!

There is also a small museum that houses the Joy Adamson collection and here you will get to watch a documentary on Joy Adamson, learning more about the history that gave birth to this serene establishment.

For nature lovers, quiet early morning and late evening walks will allow you sample some amazing and rare bird species. In the evenings, watch brilliant sunsets against the backdrop of the home’s beautiful lawns, surrounded by here stiff acacia trees, all whilst listening to the call of birds or the black & white Columbus monkeys.

Whatever happens, a trip to Naivasha is always an easy option, either for a short day trip or for you who would love to spend a night out of town. The road is smooth and tarmacked all the way and an easy enough ride for any type of car.
